The Santa Clara County Open Space Authority recently cut a record breaking deal in an effort to offer the people of Silicon Valley ample opportunity to explore the outdoors. The vast 1831 acres of wilderness was purchased for $8.6 million from early areospace company, United Technologies Corp. That’s a pretty penny for a very pretty site located on Coyote Ridge, stretching from Metcalf Road to Anderson Reservoir.
Originally used as a buffer between the public and the UTC test sites, the land will be pleasantly repurposed and ready to welcome the public. Just across Highway 101 from Coyote Creek Golf Course, this picturesque acreage decorated with rolling hills and oak trees will be open to the public by 2018, according to the open space agency.
The newly purchased land will connect about 130,000 acres of already existing open space preserves, greatly increasing wildlife habitat . Local animal residents include mountain lions, blacktail deer, bobcats, and golden eagles. The checkerspot butterfly and the California tiger salamander are only a few of the endagered species that also live in the area. The local wildlife are sure to appreciate an expansion of the places they call home. If you call the Silicon Valley home, you too are bound enjoy the scenic views and serenity of nature as you hike, bike, or even horseback ride through these beautiful winding trails.
